The Freshman FlyFisher: A Beginners Guide for a New Generation
Vancouver, B.C. - When Rick Passek used to watch his father, a self-taught fly fisherman, fish off the shore of the Highwood River near Calgary, he was instantly enchanted by the sport’s graceful, contemplative nature. He learned much of what he knows today from his father Karl, whom he calls “the best all-round fisherman [he’s] ever fished with.” In honour of his father, and all new or aspiring fly fishers, Passek has painstakingly written the entirely accessible The Freshman Flyfisher book as a helpful guide.
“What better way to bring the family together, enjoy the great outdoors and enjoy each other’s company than through fly fishing?” asks Passek.
He should know - this gifted teacher has spent over 25 years honing his fly fishing and all-round fishing techniques. In The Freshman Flyfisher, Passek shares his passion for the sport with new fishers as well as those who seriously want to learn the delicate art of successful fly fishing. His good-natured, straight forward approach means that he takes the guess work out of what kind of rod, reel and line to buy, and the best types of bait to use for certain fish.
The book is peppered with down-to-earth advice, intended at making the sport fun and affordable for the WHOLE family. “Don’t assume that more money gets you a better rod,” warns Passek, who suggests that beginners can start out with a less expensive rod and forego the $1000 varieties on the market. He knows what it’s like to start from scratch, and is aware of the fact that some may want to “test the waters” before getting a high-end kit and committing to the sport.
To simplify life, Passek has also included a handy glossary to get you used to fishing lingo, and even some fishing etiquette so that you make friends on the water, not enemies.
“Fly fishing and fishing in general are great ways to recharge your batteries, relax, and play as a family. You don’t need to be rich, young or highly athletic to enjoy the sport and it’s my belief that fishing is for EVERYBODY. Lots of people who have never tried it just don’t know it yet!” asserts Passek.
… an excellent book for any new fly fisher. Although I’ve been fly fishing for 8-ish years, I picked up some great advice as well. It’s compact and easy to carry around. When I first started and was out by myself on streams in GA, I tried carrying a couple of books to use as references. I wish I had this book with me. If you are a newbie in a northern US state or likely anywhere in Canada, this book is a must. If you are teaching a fly fishing course, you should definitely consider this book as a possible textbook. - Dean Burris (www.anglerwannabe.com)
… a great all-around reference to keep with you each time you head out to fish. - Reaction Fly & Tackle
… after reading this book I finally understood the passion my own father had for fly fishing and today have great admiration for the fly fisher who knows how to cast a line with elegance and precision. In my opinion this is the book every beginning or advanced fly fisher should have in the bookshelf. Out of five points I give this book a well deserved five. - Othmar Vohringer (BC Fishing Blog)
